The globe may well not have ended with its arrival but Y2K turned out to be a unforgettable yr, culminating from the most convoluted presidential election since that old Hayes-Tilden centennial nailbiter.

The initial era of internet mania achieved its maximum (you may possibly recall that our very own Jeff Bezos was the reigning Time Individual of the 12 months), India reached one billion in population, and within the book world we had been released to such influential figures in the decade as Malcolm Gladwell, Dave Eggers, and Zadie Smith.

Here are the top 10 bestselling books 2000 releases that you can own them right away …

1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4)

Many stories have striven to catch the minds of its readers, or its listeners for that matter. From the beginning of time people have made daring attempts at concocting amusing and diverting tales, but J.K. Rowling has spun a most convincing story. Since the introduction of Harry Potter to the public, thousands upon thousands, undoubtedly millions, of every race, age, and religion, have fallen under his spell. I finished it in less than three days. I couldn’t put it down! …

2. The Brethren

With the majority of mass market autors, you are guaranteed the same kind of read over and over. Not grisham. The Brethren focuses on a little clan of judges in a low security prison setting up a get rich quick scheme that will guarantee they are set up for good after jail. They lure the men in through placing ads in gay magazine and then track down the men who reply. This leads to the perfect extortion scheme because these men don’t want to be found. They make a mistake with one of the men and it just gets better. if you like Grisham, you’ll love the Brethren …

3. The Beatles Anthology

Hundreds of books have been written about The Beatles, but it is crushingly obvious when reading this Anthology volume that by far the best one would naturally come from the bandmembers themselves. [The
price] seems like an incredible bargain considering the size and quality of this work, which covers the years 1940 (the birth of Ringo and John) to the breakup in 1970. At 368 coffee-table sized pages it’s already huge, but the small print makes it almost double that size …

4. Eating Well For Optimum Health: The Essential Guide to Bringing Health and Pleasure Back to Eating

Of the many health books I have read, this is undoubtedly one of the best. In addition to providing a wealth of nutritional information, Dr. Weil evaluates various diet plans and exposes the dangers inherent in a number of currently popular ones. He offers medically sound and practical guidelines for healthy and enjoyable eating, stressing that for a diet to be followed successfully over a lifetime it must be a source not only of ample nourishment but also of ample pleasure and that healthful food need involve no compromise in taste. An especially useful feature of the book is the tips it contains for shopping and menu planning as well as for making sensible choices when dining out. Readers will also find Dr. Weil’s advice very helpful when consulting cookbooks …

5. The Bear and the Dragon (Jack Ryan)

Yes, as with all Clancy novels, you must endure the set-up. A good 300 pages worth of setting up the characters and plot of the book before the action explodes. It was well-worth it to keep reading. A truly incredible book – it stands out among his novels as one of the great ones, and I’ve read them all. Clancy’s President Jack Ryan makes you long for such a President in real life …

6. The O’Reilly Factor: The Good, the Bad, and the Completely Ridiculous in American Life

After spending the weekend in the recliner with this book, all I can say is wow. Bill O’Reilly, in his usual take no prisioners style, lays out his guide to taking on America… and winning. He leaves ‘no stone unturned.’ From topics of taboo such as class, sex, and politics, through jobs, celebrities, and success, he covers all the bases. In his final chapter, Bill O’Reilly shows, as his loyal viewers already know, that he truly is a class act. This book should be required reading for every high school senior in America …

7. Flags of Our Fathers (Movie Tie-in Edition)

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS is a brilliant work for so many reasons: it pays homage to the six men who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima during WWII; it is a tribute to a father who felt strongly that the real heroes at Iwo were the boys who didn’t come back; it is a testimonial to the USMC and its fighting men; it portrays a graphic and at times unimaginable description of the horrors of war; and, it depicts not only the indignities that we humans can suffer upon one another, but also the moments when common men (indeed, boys) are moved to perform acts of uncommon valor and courage. When reading this book, you will feel pride, grief, anger, sadness, and dismay. Its words will make you laugh, cry, mourn, and think hard. FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS is a good book—no, a great book—about a moment in our history and the ordinary men who performed extraordinary deeds and left their mark upon the annals of war. Read it…for the sake of the six flagraisers, the families left behind in all wars, and the whole human race …

8. The Indwelling: The Beast Takes Possession (Left Behind No. 7)

Two Thumbs up to these authors for their heavenly inspiration of what life may be like if you are not ready the first time around. It is so refressing to see Christian authors in the spot light. I completed all seven of the books and wanted more, so I have started reading the “Left Behind series for Kids”. They are just as good. They even include the main characters from the adult series. In less than a week I completed 4 out of the 8 books, which are less than 150 pages each. I have gotten my kids interested in them, and they love them. I tell my kids I HAVE to read the books before they do(smile). I truly believe we are in the end-times and that these books will be a tool to cause many people to really think about where their lives are going. If you want to get a person started reading this series, just give them the first book and they are hooked …

9. It’s Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life

When I heard that LanceArmstrong had metastatic testicular cancer, my first thought, likemany in my field, was “He’s dead.” But Lance Armstrong’s story has the happy Hollywood ending nobody expected four years ago. This isn’t Shakespeare, but I found it to be compelling reading (a stay up til you finish it kind of read). I am especially appreciative of the insight into the human condition, how one responds to adversity by either giving up or fighting back. Many of his homilies such as “turning negatives into positives” struck a nerve with me, as I’ve come to expect setbacks to be followed by unexpected success because it’s happened to me so many times. I’m pleased that the book is so popular, because maybe the rest of the world will stop thinking people like me aren’t such freaks riding our bikes 50 miles in January. It offers a glimpse into our sport that most people don’t get to see. But I mostly hope others find the human message of hope as inspirational as I did …

10. From Dawn to Decadence: 500 Years of Western Cultural Life 1500 to the Present

I wasn’t sure what to think while I was reading. But, I couldn’t put this down. While reading, I thought Barzun crammed tightly so many ideas, events, details, and biographies that he verged on stimulus overload. Later, when remembering names or events that I encountered when watching TV or reading, I realized how much of the book is retainable. This book is a challenge to those finding it fashionable to denounce Western Civilization. As Barzun says: “[T]he West offered the world a set of ideas and institutions not found earlier or elsewhere.” We are rightly proud of them …
